Gram flour curry is a popular Pakistani and Indian dish, known as "karhi". Yogurt and gram flour are cooked together, along with spices to make a spicy curry. Fresh fried gram flour dumplings are added to it right before taking it off the heat.

  • Yogurt 1/2 kg
  • Gram flour 1/2 cup
  • Red chilies ground 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander ground 2 tsp
  • Garlic and ginger paste 1 tbsp
  • Green chilies whole 4
  • Fresh coriander leaves 1 bunch finely chopped
  • Spring onions finely chopped 4
  • Curry leaves 4
  • Salt to taste
  • For Dumplings:
  • Gram flour 1 cup
  • Baking soda 1/2 tsp
  • Onions finely chopped 1
  • Green chilies finely chopped 4
  • White cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Oil for frying
  • For Garnishing:
  • Coriander seeds (roasted) 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds 6
  • Red chilies whole 9
  • Curry leaves 7
  • Garlic cloves finely sliced 4
  • Fry the above ingredients for garnishing.

Cooking Directions

  1. For Dumplings: Mix all the ingredients together to make a fine paste.

  2. Scoop it out with a tablespoon and fry in hot oil as dumplings.

  3. For Curry: Mix the yogurt, salt, red chilies, coriander powder, garlic and ginger paste, gram flour and 4 cups of water.

  4. Strain the mixture into a fairly large sized pan, add chopped onions, green chilies and the curry leaves.

  5. Allow the broth to cook for 10-15 minutes.

  6. Lower the heat when green chilies become tender.

  7. Add dumplings and lastly the garnish and serve hot.
