Rasam is thin juice like lentil soup. It can be enjoyed with rice, papad or soup. Enjoy this recipe of lemon rasam made of black gram.

  • Black gram (Urad daal) 4 oz
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Black pepper 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilies 2
  • Ginger a little
  • Asafoetida a small bit
  • Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Salt 1 tsp or to taste
  • Lemon medium 2
  • Coriander leaves as required

Cooking Directions

  1. Wash the lentils and cook it in a little water.

  2. Dilute it with about 2 pints water.

  3. Powder the cumin seeds and black pepper and add to the lentils.

  4. Salt may also be added at this point. Add lemon juice.

  5. Then heat a little ghee and fry the mustard seeds, when the seeds sputter put in chopped ginger and chilies and stir well.

  6. Add to the lentils. Lower the heat and when the lentil curry comes to the boil, remove from heat.

  7. Add the chopped coriander leaves, and serve in cups.
