Ingredients

  • Fish 2 lb
  • Coconut 1
  • Onions 3
  • Cloves garlic 12
  • Ginger 2 inch piece
  • Green chilies 8
  • Flour (maida) 4 oz
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Tomatoes 2 small
  • Oil 3 tbsp
  • Vinegar 3/8 pint
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions

  1. Grate the coconut, add 1/2 pint hot water and extract thick milk.

  2. Now add 2 pints hot water to the grated coconut and extract the second milk.

  3. Be careful to strain it well and keep the thick and thin milks separate.

  4. Slice the onions fine and chop the tomatoes.

  5. Finely chop ginger and garlic and slit the chilies lengthwise.

  6. Wash fish and slice (pomfret, salmon or any variety available may be used).

  7. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onions, garlic and ginger for 2 minutes.

  8. While this is frying, put in the green chilies.

  9. Add flour and turmeric powder stirring well so that the flour does not form lumps.

  10. Add tomatoes and tin coconut milk and boil for 10 minutes.

  11. Now add fish and vinegar and cook for 15 minutes.

  12. Add thick coconut milk and salt and cook for another 5 minutes.

  13. Tamarind water maybe used instead of vinegar.

  14. Serve with plain boiled rice or idlies.
