Ingredients

  • Red Lentils (masoor daal) 8 oz
  • Ghee 6 tbsp
  • Potatoes medium 2
  • Tomatoes medium ripe 3
  • Brinjal (aubergine) medium 1
  • Onion 1
  • Cloves garlic 4
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves 1/2 bunch
  • Green chilies 6
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • All spice 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions

  1. Scrub and chop potatoes, tomatoes and brinjal, slice the onion and set all vegetables aside.

  2. Wash the lentils thoroughly and put to boil in 2 pints water, adding turmeric powder.

  3. When the lentils is half done, add the chopped vegetables, together with the ground cumin seeds and salt.

  4. (Sugar may also be added, if desired).

  5. Cook until the potatoes are soft, then add chopped coriander leaves and whole green chilies, cover and set aside.

  6. Heat ghee and fry in it all the spices and garlic, and add to the cooked lentils.

  7. Keep covered. The consistency of the lentils should not be very thick.

  8. Serve hot with plain white rice.
