A tasty and healthy prawns biryani is presented for all the seafood lovers to enjoy seafood in a desi style! It can be served for lunch or dinner and is enjoyed with raita.

Ingredients

  • Basmati rice 500 gm (parboiled and drained)
  • Oil for cooking
  • Prawns 500 gm (cleaned)
  • Onions 4 large (thinly sliced)
  • Tomatoes 200 gm (finely chopped)
  • Saffron powder 1 tbsp (soaked in 3 tbsp warm milk)
  • Coriander leaves 3 tbsp (chopped)
  • For Marinade:
  • Yogurt 1 cup
  • Lemon juice 5 ml
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste 2 tbsp
  • Salt as required
  • For Dry Spice Mix:
  • Coriander seed 4 tbsp (roasted and ground)
  • Cumin seeds 2 tbsp (roasted and ground)
  • Fennel seeds 1 tbsp (roasted and ground)
  • Cinnamon 2 cm (roasted and ground)
  • Cloves 5 (roasted and ground)
  • Green cardamoms 5 (roasted and ground)
  • Peppercorns 10 (roasted and ground)
  • Red chillies 2 dry (roasted and ground)
  • For Wet Spice Mix:
  • Green chillies 2 (blended)
  • Mint leaves ½ cup (blended)
  • Coriander leaves ½ cup (blended)

Cooking Directions

  1. In a bowl add yogurt, lemon juice, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste and salt and mix well.

  2. Add prawns to it and set aside.

  3. Heat oil in a pan and fry one third onions until crispy and golden.

  4. Drain and keep aside.

  5. In the same oil, add remaining onions fry till they become transparent and add tomatoes and fry for 5 minutes.

  6. Add the dry and wet spice mixes and fry till the oil begins to separate.

  7. Now add the prawns with the marinade stir and cook until the prawns become tender.

  8. Season with salt and remove from flame.

  9. Grease a large, deep baking dish and layer half the rice, followed by the prepared prawns mix and then cover with the remaining rice.

  10. Pour saffron and milk mixture over the rice, garnish with fried onions and coriander.

  11. Seal the dish with dough.

  12. Bake until golden.

  13. Serve hot with raita.
