Three essential components make up this dish - pasta, meat filling and cheese sauce which are layered in a pan and baked till golden brown. Each stage will require dirtying some pots and pans, but you will agree that the result is worth the clean up. Recipe by cooking expert Sharmeen.

Ingredients

  • Macaroni Pasta 250 gms
  • Eggs 2 beaten
  • Grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup
  • Bread Crumbs 2 tbsp
  • For Meat Sauce:
  • Olive Oil 2 tbsp
  • Onions 2 chopped finely
  • Beef Mince 750 gm
  • Canned Tomatoes 400 gm
  • Tomato Paste 90 gm
  • Beef Stock 1/2 cup
  • Ground Cinnamon 1/2 tsp
  • Egg 1 beaten lightly
  • For Cheese Topping:
  • Butter 90 gm
  • Flour 1/2 cup
  • Milk 3, 1/2 cup
  • Parmesan Cheese 1 cup
  • Egg yolk 2

Cooking Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C oil a oven proof dish.

  2. Now cook the pasta, drain the water then combine the hot pasta, egg and cheese in a large bowl.

  3. Press the pasta at the base of the dish.

  4. To make the meat sauce:

  5. Heat oil in a large pan add the oil,onions and mince and cook for a few minutes until beef is browned.

  6. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste,stock and leave to simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes.

  7. Once cooked cool and stir in the egg.

  8. For the cheese topping.

  9. Melt butter in a saucepan add flour and cook until mixture bubbles and thickens.

  10. Now remove from heat and gradually mix in the milk.

  11. Stir over heat until sauce boils and thickens, stir in cheese.

  12. Cool for 5 minutes and stir in egg yolks.

  13. Pour the meat sauce over the pasta and then top with the cheese sauce and bread crumbs.

  14. Place in the oven and bake for 30 -40 minutes till golden brown.
