  • Red gram 100 gm
  • Oil 15 ml
  • Mustard 5 gm
  • Whole red chillies 5
  • Curry leaves 10
  • Asafoetida 1 gm
  • Garlic 30 gm
  • Turmeric 5 gm
  • Tomatoes 2-3
  • Peppercorns 3-4
  • Green chilli 1
  • Tamarind 100 gm
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions

  1. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add mustard seeds and saute until they begin to crackle.

  2. Add whole red chillies, curry leaves, asafoetida and crushed garlic, stir for a few seconds.

  3. Add turmeric, washed red gram, tomatoes, peppercorns, slit green chilli, tamarind pulp and salt.

  4. Stir and add water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until the dal is mashed.

  5. Serve hot as a starter or as an accompaniment to a meal.
