Ingredients

  • Whole black lentils (maanh) 12 oz
  • Onion 1
  • Water 2 pints
  • Milk 1 pint
  • Ginger 2 oz
  • Garlic 1 small pod
  • Green chilies 4
  • Garam masala 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilies 2
  • Ghee 2 tbsp
  • Cream or white 1 tbsp
  • Butter
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions

  1. Wash the dhal well under running water.

  2. Place to boil with the water, finely sliced ginger and garlic, red chilies and salt.

  3. Reduce heat and simmer till nearly cooked.

  4. Add milk and cook gently. This will take about 4 hours.

  5. Add a little more water if necessary.

  6. Mash the dhal with a wooden spoon and simmer till a creamy consistency.

  7. Heat ghee and fry finely chopped onion and green chilies, add garam masala and pour into the dhal.

  8. Just before serving, mix in the cream or butter mix.

  9. Serve with chappatis.
