Ingredients

  • Broad field beans (Rangoon vaal) 2 cups
  • Soda-bi-carb 1/4 teaspoon
  • Carom seeds (ajwain) 1/4 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida (hing) 1/4 teaspoon
  • Chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder (haldi) 1/4 teaspoon
  • Jaggery (gur), grated 1 tablespoon
  • Tamarind paste (imli), optional 1 teaspoon
  • Oil 2 tablespoons
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions

  1. Clean, Wash and soak the beans in enough water overnight.

  2. Drain, add the soda bi-carb and 1 1/2 cups of water and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

  3. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.Keep aside.

  4. Heat oil, add carom seeds, asafoetida, chilli powder, turmeric & saute for a few seconds.

  5. Add the cooked beans with 1 cup of water, the jaggery, tamarind pulp and salt, mix well & simmer for 7 to 8 minutes.

  6. Serve hot.
