A delicious Bengali/Assam curry. Freshly made gram lentils biscuits are fried and cooked in a spicy thick curry, along with potatoes.

  • Gram lentils 1 cup
  • Potatoes 2
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Tomatoes (chopped) 3
  • Sugar 1/2 tsp
  • All spice 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as needed
  • Grind Together:
  • Onion 1
  • Ginger 1/2" piece
  • Cloves of garlic 5
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Coriander 1 tsp
  • Chillies 5

Cooking Directions

  1. Soak gram lentils for 10-12 hours.

  2. Grind it with onions and other ingredients given for grinding.

  3. Heat oil in a pan, add a pinch of asafoetida and then the ground lentils.

  4. Cook well on low flame.

  5. Then spread it in a greased tray (thali).

  6. Leave for a few minutes.

  7. Cut into diamond shapes and deep fry.

  8. Chop potatoes lengthwise and deep fry.

  9. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.

  10. Put in turmeric powder, chopped tomatoes, salt and a little sugar.

  11. Cook for a few minutes. Put in the fried potatoes.

  12. When tender, add the fried lentil pieces.

  13. Put a little all spice before serving.

  14. The pieces should not break and the gravy, should be very thick.
