  • When cutting through an Onion, the onion cells get cut too which releases a gas that reacts with water and creates sulphuric acid which causes irritation. The eye then releases water to dilute the acid which makes the eye watery.

  • If you use onions to cook from time to time and is annoyed with the whole onions making you cry then here are a few cool tricks that you can do to stop your eyes from crying when you cut onions.

  • • The cells from a cold onion react slower when cut. Keep onions in the fridge, or put one in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting.

  • • Peel the onion and soak in water for at least 15 minutes than cut into slices.

  • • Cut the onion under cold running water to wash away the irritants before they can make it up to your eyes.

  • • Don't chop the onion root or do it last. The reasoning is that the root end of the onion has a higher concentration of these nasty chemicals. That may be so, but the difference is not very great since the non-root onion releases plenty of noxious fumes.

  • • Apply little vinegar on the cutting board it absorbs some of the enzymes and will trouble your less.

  • • Light a candle near the cutting board or light a burner. Cut onions as close to flame as possible without danger of being burned. The heat will draw the sulphur to it and away from your eyes.

  • • When cutting the onion you can breathe through your mouth so that the vapors pass through the mouth and get stuck in the tongue. In addition, when you breathe through the mouth the tear duct will be bypassed and so you won’t generate any tears. You can also cut the onion near a cloud of steam or running water from a tap.
