  • The tradition of the New Year’s Resolution goes all the way back to 153 BC. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, he could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year. The Romans named the first month of the year after Janus, the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. He was always depicted with two faces, one on the front of his head and the other on the back. Thus, he could look backward and forward at the same time. At midnight the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new. The Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year’s Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the profile of god Janus became more common New Year’s gifts. Although the date for New Year’s Day is not the same in every culture, it is always a time for celebration and for customs to ensure good luck in the coming year.

  • Sonia started a new diet for the fifth time. She knew she really wanted to change her lifestyle. She kept abreast of all the new information. She had also set goals and positively told herself time and again she could do it. But she hasn’t been able to yet.

  • Aamir is busy-really busy all the time. But sometimes he wonders if his doing well will make any difference in the long run. He has been ignoring his family…He often asks himself if there is any meaning in life.

  • Does any of this sound familiar? As Stephen Covey put it, “These are deep problems, painful problems – problems that quick-fix approaches can’t solve.” Each of us has, at one point or the other in life, vowed to make changes in our lifestyle-be it physical or spiritual. No matter how often we fail, these resolutions keep us going. Hopeful. Always aspiring for a better tomorrow. As some wise man said, and I quote, “Enthusiasm is the baking powder of life. Without it you are flat; with it you rise.” Let us all be determined to make some small changes in our lives.

  • Let us vow to:

  • Learn Something New
Have you been putting off the idea of taking driving lessons recurrently or learning a new language? Perhaps you are considering a career change, or just how to fix your computer. Whether you take a course or read a book, you’ll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year’s resolutions to keep.

  • Get Fit

Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. It reduces the risk of ailments, increases longevity, help to maintain weight loss, lowers blood pressure and enhances mood.

  • Help Someone

Helping someone gives an incomparable pleasure. It is one of the most satisfying feelings one can achieve.

  • Enjoy Life

Life is to be lived and enjoyed. Sounds clichéd? But true is the fact that we tend to overlook and take for granted life’s small gifts and blessings bestowed upon us. So let’s vow to live each day to the fullest and reflect upon God’s creations.

  • Get Organized

Organization is the key to a successful life. Set priorities and always begin with the end in mind. Minor tasks like organizing the wardrobe or your office desk will save ample time otherwise wasted.

  • Keep a Diary

Keeping a diary helps to record significant happenings and achievements. It helps clarify the vision for the future, and makes interesting reading too.
