  • Popcorn is kernels of certain varieties that explode when heated, or are masticated off a long stalk. Grown on every continent (except Antarctica) it constitutes a staple food in many regions of the world & is a major component of hundreds of other food products. It is a major source of cooking oil & (as a replacement for wheat flour) is used to make cornbread & other baked products.

  • Cornflakes are known universally as a common breakfast cereal, corn can also be consumed in unripe state, when the kernels are fully grown but still soft. It is usually cooked to be made palatable; this may be done by simply boiling or roasting the whole ears & eating the kernels right off the cob.

  • The cooked unripe kernels may also be shaved off the cob and served as a vegetable in side dishes, salads, garnishes, etc. Alternatively, the raw unripe kernels may also be grated off the cobs and processed into a variety of cooked dishes.

  • Cornstarch is an ingredient in home cooking and in many industrialized food products. This starch can be treated to produce high fructose syrups & sweetener.

  • To determine if an ear of corn is ready for eating, peel back the husk & gently place your fingernail in a corn kernel which should be very tender, not to tough to penetrate.

  • Ears should have golden silks, bright green leaves and husks that fit tightly. Kernels should be full & milky.

  • Corn is also grown as feed for livestock & used as fish bait, called dough balls.

  • Corn once saved lives of the earliest colonists during their 1st harsh winter in the New World, when the natives shared their knowledge of its many uses.
