Sweating occurs when fluids come to the surface of your skin via sweat glands. Sweating is important for the body as it helps the body in staying cool.

  • With the mercury rising high, walking on roads, working out in a gym or facing difficult situations all make us sweat. Sweating or perspiration is both healthy and natural. According to research, a pea-sized bead of sweat can cool 1 liter (about 1 quart) of blood to 1 degree Fahrenheit. However, Excessive sweating not only makes one feel uneasy, but it also causes bad odour and embarrassment in public.

  • Causes

  • If the perspiration is heavy under the arms, on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands, too much sweating on the chest or back, heavy blushing or sweating on the face for no reason, then you are heavily sweating.

  • Some people have heredity problems. Their tendency to sweat excessively is hereditary. Eating and drinking certain foods and beverages that contain caffeine make one sweat. Eating spicy foods also make us sweat. Other causes include certain diseases such as cough, cancer, anxiety, fever, heart disease, infection, low blood sugar, menopause, mental disorders, overactive thyroid gland, obesity, tuberculosis, malaria, low level of hormones, low blood sugar and over-active thyroid also causes heavy sweating. Drugs that can cause heavy sweating include some anti-psychotic medication used to treat mental disorders.

  • What Happens

  • The skin has 2 types of sweat glands namely eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands occur over most your body and open directly onto the surface of your skin. Apocrine glands develop in areas abundant in hair follicles such as on your scalp etc. a person has almost between 2 million to 5 million eccrine sweat glands. When your body temperature rises, your autonomic nervous system stimulates these glands to secrete fluid onto the surface of your, where it cools your body as it evaporates. This fluid (perspiration) is composed mainly of water and salt (sodium chloride) and contains trace amounts of other electrolytic substances that help regulate the balance of fluids in your body as well as substances such as urea. Apocrine glands secrete a fatty sweat directly into the tubule of the gland. When under emotional stress, the wall of the tubule contracts and the sweat is pushed to the surface of your skin where bacteria begin breaking it down. Usually, it’s the bacterial breakdown of apocrine sweat that causes an odour.

  • Treatment

  • You can do a lot of things at home to avoid the problem.

    1. Take bath daily as regular bathing helps in keeping the number of bacteria on the akin in check. Micro organisms thrive in the damp spaces between your toes so do not forget to dry your feet.
    2. Going barefoot is a good idea or atleast take off your shoes now and then.
    3. Choose the shoes made of natural materials like leather, it can help in allowing the feet to breathe.
    4. Don’t wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row.
    5. Cotton and wool socks help keep the feet dry because they absorb moisture. Change socks or hose once or twice a day, drying the feet properly each time.
    6. In clothing choose natural fabrics like cotton, wool and silk, as these allow the skin to breathe. During exercise, wear hi-tech fabrics that remove moisture from your skin.
    7. Use deodorants and antiperspirants at night on palms and soles of feet. Try perfume-free antiperspirants.
    8. Try yoga or meditation, as these help to control stress which forms perspiration.
    9. Improve your diet. Avoid oily and spicy food and caffeine. Also avoid foods with strong odours like garlic and onions.
    10. Change clothes and bed sheets more often.
    11. Drink a lot of water to replace lost body fluids.
    12. Lower the room temperature slightly to prevent more sweating.
    13. Loss of weight might help-as fat people sweat more.
