Mango, indigenous to the Indo-Pak Sub-Continent, is cultivated in many tropical regions and distributed widely in the world. It is one of the super fruits most extensively exploited for food, juice, flavor, fragrance and color.
Pakistan is one of the top three mango exporting countries in the world. Though mangoes are cultivated in all the provinces, it is mainly grown in Sindh and southern Punjab. Some of the major exportable ones are mentioned here.
When ripe, mangoes usually transform from green to yellow or yellowish red. But medium-sized sweet & juicy Langra does not change its color even on maturing. Sindhri, the best of all varieties, is yellow, large, and superb in taste. The shelf-life of this variety is longer. Chaunsa is medium-sized with appealing aroma. Deshri is small but very sweet. Weighing over a pound each, Sonaro is good for juicing. Anwar Retole, Saroli, Fajri, Beganpali are other known varieties.
Mangoes are rich in a variety of phytochemicals and nutrients; high in prebiotic dietary fiber, vitamin C, polyphenols and carotenoids; essential vitamins and dietary minerals; antioxidant vitamins, and comprise 25%, 78% and 9% of the Dietary Reference Intake in a 165 g serving; Vitamin B6, other B Vitamins and essential nutrients such as potassium, copper and 17 amino acids are at good levels; peel and pulp contain other phytonutrients, such as the pigment antioxidants-carotenoids and polyphenols-omega-3 and -6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
