As the name itself implies, Indoor air quality (IAQ) is the air present indoors, which might affect health if it contains toxic chemicals and other particles harmful to health. Outdoor air pollution can harm health but research has shown that levels of air pollution indoors may be 2 to 5 times greater than outdoors. Since normally people spend more time indoors than outside, it becomes essential to keep the air inside healthy and free from pollution.

  • There can be a lot of sources of pollution likewise oil, gas, coal, wood, tobacco, kerosene, building materials, furnishings, wet or damp carpet, cabinetry, furniture, household cleaning products, central heating and cooking systems, humidification devices, radon, pesticides, air fresheners, smoking, the use of inverted or mal-functioning stoves, furnaces, the use of solvents in cleaning, personal care products like hair spray or soaps and too much moisture in the house.

  • These pollutants can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, dizziness and fatigue, asthma, hypersensitivity, pneumonitis, humidifier, respiratory disease, heart disease, cancer.

  • Improving Indoor Air Quality

  • 1- Good ventilation should be present indoors to allow fresh air to enter.
    2- Smoking should be avoided.
    3- Air-purifiers should be installed more frequently.
    4- Pesticides should be avoided to be used in gardens and in the surroundings of homes and buildings, as these can be carried on shoes and clothes inside. Instead natural pest control techniques should be used.
    5- Natural household clearing products should be utilized.
    6- More and more toxin consuming plants should be kept to remove pollutants from the environment.
    7- Vents in the kitchens, bathroom and dryer should be cleaned regularly.
    8- Maintenance of air conditioners, refrigerators and other such appliances should be done more often.
    9- Exposure to carbon monoxide should be prevented by keeping gas appliances properly serviced.
    10- Water-damaged carpets, bedding and items used by pets should be removed.
    11- Crawl spaces, basements and soil around the buildings and houses should be kept clean and dry.
