In cooking cutting an onion is one of the common task and most of the recipes call for this. People cut onion in their own way in which some are right and some are wrong. So this is necessary to adopt the right way to slice the onion. Read this article with pictures for a good understanding.
Trim the Ends of Onion
Before starting you must have a sharp knife and a cutting board. Place onion on its side on the cutting board.
Trim off the top and bottom end of onion.
Cut the Onion in Half Lengthwise
Now onion has two flat ends. Now place the blade of knife in the center of upward facing flat end and carefully cut the onion into half.
Peel Off Skin
Peel off the outer skin of onion.
Slice the Onion
Start chopping from one half on the onion. Place it on its largest flat surface on the cutting board, root end should be away from you. Starting from the root end of the onion toward your body, make a bunch of vertical cuts through all the onion layers, but don’t go all the way to the root end. This will hold the onion together and make the rest of the chopping easier.
Chop the Onion
Now its time to chop the onion, rotate the onion so the end cut faces your knife. Apply 1/2-inch cuts perpendicular to the first set of cuts. The onion will fall apart into neat, 1/2-inch dice. Discard root. And be careful when you get to the end, because there's not much room for your fingers. Repeat with the other half.
