How to Sterilize Jars
Isn’t it always nice to prepare jams, preserves, pickles and squash at home? Homemade preserves add that little twinkle to the dining table. But if we don’t properly sterilize jars that we are going to use for preservation, the food spoils quickly and all that hard work goes to waste. It’s important that we give jars as much importance as to the food that we are going to preserve in it.

  • Isn’t it always nice to prepare jams, preserves, pickles and squash at home? Homemade preserves add that little twinkle to the dining table. But if we don’t properly sterilize jars that we are going to use for preservation, the food spoils quickly and all that hard work goes to waste. It’s important that we give jars as much importance as to the food that we are going to preserve in it. It’s very quick and easy to sterilize jars. We can sterilize jars while preparing food preserves. But before starting to sterilize jars, there are some points that we should keep in mind.

  • • First step to Sterilize Jars is properly fitted lids. Check the lids first if they fit well to the jar and seals properly. 
    • Wash all the jars and lids properly with soap and hot water making sure you remove the entire food residue.
    • It would be a lot more convenient to sterilize more jars than you think you would need, rather than running short in the middle of preserving.
    • Take out the jars one by one from the sterilization to be used or else they will cool down quickly.
    • Don’t ever put cold food in hot jars or hot food in cold jars. The food temperature should be near to equal with the jar that is going to be used.
    • Leave food preserve filled jars for 15 minutes to settle and then seal.

  • Here are a couple of quick and easy methods to sterilize jars at home. You can choose a method to sterilize jars in accordance to your convenience.

  • BOILING WATER STERILIZED  
    This is the most convenient and widely used process to sterilize jars. Put jars in a large pot mouth up and fill it with water. Put the lids in a separate smaller pot and fill with water too. Now place the water filled pots on the stove and boil. When the water starts to boil, let it keep boiling for 10 minutes. Then turn off the heat and remove the jars from the boiling pot of water and start filling with food preserve. If you are going to store dry food then make sure all the moisture is gone form the jars and lids.

  • OVEN STERILIZED   
    Place the washed jars in an oven upside down, apart from each other. Turn on the oven heat to 160 C. When the oven reaches this temperature, turn off the heat. Now remove the bottles one by one making sure you have oven mitts on and start filling the jars.

  • DISHWASHER STERILIZED
    Place clean jars in the dishwasher without soup and time the dishwasher to the time when your food preserve will be ready. Take out the jars one by on to be used.

  • MICROWAVE STERILIZED
    After washing the jars place them in microwave with some water left in the jars and run the microwave for a minute or two.
