SKIN BASICS (BEAUTY)
In the never-ending quest for clearer, softer, smoother skin, it’s easy to forget that skin’s true function is to protect you from the harsh effects of the outside world. Skin acts as your own personal suit of armor to shield you from the damaging effects of sun, pollution, smoke, weather, and water. It’s also a mirror of what’s going on inside you, showing the results of stress, diet, hormones, and health changes almost as quickly as they happen.

  • In the never-ending quest for clearer, softer, smoother skin, it’s easy to forget that skin’s true function is to protect you from the harsh effects of the outside world. Skin acts as your own personal suit of armor to shield you from the damaging effects of sun, pollution, smoke, weather, and water. It’s also a mirror of what’s going on inside you, showing the results of stress, diet, hormones, and health changes almost as quickly as they happen.

  • Beyond the daily cleansing that’s needed to keep skin healthy and clear, certain maintenance measures can have a real impact on your looks. They may require a bit of time and thought at first, but make them a part of your day-to-day routine and you’ll see result – skin that looks fresh, smooth, and healthy – now and later in life.

  • Drink Plenty of Water

  • Drinking six to eight glass of water a day helps to keep the skin hydrated and moist, with a more supple appearance - especially helpful for dry skin. It also helps the body recover from the dehydrating effects of exercise and diet, and flushes out cellular wastes more efficiently. Remember other types of drinks don’t count towards your total water intake, especially fizzy drinks, coffee, tea, or other beverages that contain dehydrating caffeine.

  • Don’t Smoke

  • Smoking causes cancer. If that’s not enough to dissuade you, listen to this: Smoking also causes fine, feathery lines to form around your lip area, constricts blood vessels, inhibits oxygen delivery to the skin, prompts breakouts of adult acne, and discolours your pores and teeth. This habit takes a real toll on your looks – not to mention your health.

  • Watch What You Eat

  • Yes, eating healthy foods is common sense: A diet that’s low in fat and that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supplies the nutrients that keep the skin – and the entire body - in optimum condition. What’s not as well known, is that maintaining a stable weight through proper diet and exercise is also important for preserving your skin’s appearance. Repeated gains and losses mean that your skin must repeatedly grow and shrink. In later life especially, the results are stretch marks, wrinkling, and loose skin.

  • Exercise Regularly

  • When it comes to exercise, most women concentrate on the total-body benefits that it gives – cardiovascular fitness, enhanced muscle tone, and weight maintenance – without realizing its importance in keeping the skin fit as well. Exercise increases blood flow to the skin (which is why your face flushes during a work-out), nourishing cells with oxygen and nutrients, removing cellular wastes, and encouraging skin to work at maximum efficiency.

  • Get Enough Sleep

  • Easier said than done, but keeping a regular schedule with adequate sleep is crucial for helping the skin function efficiently and keeping those dark circles at bay. Sleep-time is when the body finally has time to repair itself from the rigors of the day. When you’re sleep-deprived, the body is unable to perform its nightly tune-up as quickly or completely.

  • Limit Stress

  • A certain amount of stress is inescapable: work, family, and money concerns are a never-ending part of life. The problem comes when stress is constant and at a high level. Not only can it contribute to skin wreckers like insomnia (and other unhealthy habits like smoking and unbalanced eating), but stress also prompts the body to increase its production of hormones. You may never eliminate stress from your life completely, so you need to find a healthy way to relieve it. Exercise, meditation, massage, yoga, and relaxing baths are all wonderful ways to manage the stress of everyday life.
