Summer time is upon us and joy of this hot season is ice cream. Ice cream has been a longtime favorite of children and adults alike. Ice cream was originally made by churning or whipping air into a chilled mixture of cream, sugar, and fresh fruit or other flavorings.

  • Summer time is upon us and joy of this hot season is ice cream. Ice cream has been a longtime favorite of children and adults alike. Ice cream was originally made by churning or whipping air into a chilled mixture of cream, sugar, and fresh fruit or other flavorings. Today, some commercial ice cream also contains milk, eggs and stabilizers. Stabilizers ensure that the texture and flavor of the ice cream do not vary.

  • Ice cream is a good source of calcium, but it is also high in fat. It makes a nutritious snack, if you can afford the calories and do not eat too much.

  • Ice cream is at least a century older than this century. Exactly where and how it got its start is unclear. Some historians give credit to Catherine de Medici and her Florentine cooks, who arrived at the French court in the middle of the 16th century. At that time Charles I of England hosted a sumptuous state banquet for many of his friends and family. The meal, consisting of many delicacies of the day. After much preparation, the king’s French chef had concocted an apparently new dish. It was cold and resembled fresh-fallen snow but was much creamier and sweeter than any other after- dinner dessert. So Charles I, is the first on record to have served “ice cream”.

  • This story is just one of the fascinating tales which surrounded the evolution of most popular dessert, ice cream. Ice cream was not invented, but rather came to be over years of similar efforts. Indeed, the Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar is said to have sent slaves to the mountains to bring snow and ice to cool and freeze the fruit drinks.

  • In the USA, July is officially recognized as 'National Ice Cream Month'; designated by President Reagan in 1984, the idea behind it was for people to celebrate the fun in ice cream as well as recognizing its nutritious value.

  • The history of ice cream in the 20th century is one the great change and increases in availability and popularity. Ice cream becomes popular throughout the world in the second half of the 20th century after cheap refrigeration become common. There was an explosion of ice cream stores and of flavors and types.

  • Nowadays ice cream comes in many different flavors. In start restaurant advertised 28 flavors, than made 31 flavors and now over 1000 varieties available. Few years back the most popular flavor of ice cream was Vanilla but with the arrival of different varieties now it becomes change.

  • Making ice cream at home is very easy and it helps you watch what you eat. Here are some good recipes which really you will like.

  • Strawberry Ice Cream

  • Ingredients:
    3 egg yolks (beaten)
    250ml milk
    250ml fresh cream
    100g sugar
    2 cups of strawberries
    1 tbsp of vanilla essence
    Pinch of salt

  • Method:
    Take the strawberries and mash them in with half the sugar (i.e. 50g) in a bowl. Place in the refrigerator whilst making the rest of the recipe.

  • In a separate saucepan, mix the egg yolks with the milk, salt and the remaining sugar. Place over a medium heat just to boiling point (stirring all the time). Do not let it boil.
     
    Transfer the mixture into a chilled bowl to cool. When cool place in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours, remembering to stir the mixture from time to time. When cool, stir into the mixture the cream and vanilla essence and then blend in the strawberry/sugar mixture. Transfer the complete mixture into suitable plastic freezing container, cover and set in the freezing compartment until half-frozen, than whisk the cream thoroughly and freeze until firm.

  • Mango Ice Cream

  • Ingredients:
    3 egg yolks (beaten)
    250ml milk
    250ml fresh cream
    100g sugar
    2 cups of mango pulp
    1 tbsp mango custard
    1 tsp yellow food color 
    Pinch of salt

  • Method:
    Mix custard powder and egg yolks in ¼ cup milk.

  • Heat up milk and add sugar. When sugar dissolve stir custard powder and yolk mixture in boiled milk. Cook till become thick. Strain it and keep on room temperature to cool.

  • When cool place in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours. When cool, stir into the mixture the cream, salt, yellow food color and mango pulp. Transfer the complete mixture into suitable plastic freezing container, cover and set in the freezing compartment until half-frozen, than whisk the cream thoroughly and freeze until firm.

  • There is no better summer treat than ice cream, making your own gives you the benefit of controlling the ingredients that go into it. When you start with fresh, quality ingredients, your outcome is a fresh, quality product.
