Yes it’s that time of the year when you feel like snuggling up in the corner of your sofa, with a blanket around yourself, a hot cup of hot chocolate in front of the telly with of course a big box of tissues to wipe your nose, and medicine at hand as you start to feel the fever, headache and cough getting worse. You’re bound to get the cold sooner or later or have someone else around you that will it. Here are NINE tips.....
First, keep yourself healthy to prevent a cold from even happening, and keep your nutrients up throughout the winter season. Here are NINE tips that can help you fight the cold:
1. Taking Vitamin C supplements is a cheapest, easiest and effective way to prevent from getting sick. If you feel the symptoms of a cold immediately take Vitamin C supplements after a meal or snack, for a few days and then you may notice that the cold goes away on its own. Oranges and lemons are a great source of Vitamin C.
2. Take a shower, the steam from the water helps to loosen mucus and other junk that has become stuck in your nasal passage and helps to moisturize those same passages, meaning that your rate of stuffy noses and watery eyes, as well as frequent sneezing, will be greatly reduced.
3. Vitamin A is not commonly thought of as a vitamin that can help with the common cold, it has a number of very healthy side effects, it acts as a natural decongestant, and will help keep your nose clear.
4. Hot tea can be very soothing, add honey and it will soothe a sore throat and make it easier to swallow.
5. Ginger fights rhinoviruses, the most common cold virus. It also contains substances that help coughs and reduce pain and fever. Make ginger tea to fight cold, sore throat, cough (see below for simple recipe).
6. Eat two cloves of raw garlic at the onset of symptoms. Crush or chop the garlic to release its allicin (a potent immune-booster). Use it on hummus, or in sandwiches.
7. Drink a lot of 100% pure juice (check the labels!) and water, providing a lot of nutrients, keeping up your immune system and help you recover faster.
8. You might not feel like getting out of bed but exercise will keep your immune system in top shape and also keep blood vessels and other important cells throughout your body moving, a key factor in reducing illness and recovering faster.
9. Mums will always recommend chicken soup however, "Hot and Sour" soup might be even better in relieving congestion and helping with cold symptoms, it contains many additional herbs and spices, in addition to chicken broth, clearing out your nasal passages and sinuses much more easily, not to mention that it tastes great, and the additional spices do a lot to help with your overall health.
Avoid cough drops that contain high amounts of sugar, and menthol based products are generally much more effective. Germs are easily spread, wash your hands frequently, and do not touch your face or mouth anytime after shaking hands with others.
Hot & Sour Soup – (very quick & basic)
Combine cabbage, carrots, capsicum, chicken stock, white pepper, black pepper, soya sauce, white vinegar, chilli sauce in large pan. Boil, add chicken, dissolve corn flour in some stock and add to pan, add beaten egg and stir, add sesame oil, bean sprouts and spring onions serve immediately.
Boil water take off heat. Chop up finely a small piece of ginger, and place in freshly boiled water, with cloves and cinnamon stick. Let the ingredients nourish the water, pour into a mug and mix in honey and drink straightaway.
