  • Many people believe that ‘love’ is a universal language that appeals to every human being in the world. I however believe, that classifying love as universally general in perception is a far-fetched notion. Wouldn’t it be a delicious idea to replace the notion of ‘love’ with ‘food’!

  • Indeed ‘food’ is something that appeals to each person individually; the beauty lies in its diversity and cultural affiliation to various regions. Our taste buds are primarily accustomed to the flavours that we are conditioned to incorporate and accept in our daily lives. It is quite remarkable how toddlers have the unique and individual ability at such a young age to determine their preferences to certain foods. This ability is further enhanced and tweaked as we reach adulthood when one starts becoming more assertive and decisive with regard to eating habits and food choices. • Cold milk is like a summer revelation in the fridge. There are so many wonders you could create with that calcium enriched and creamy goodness. Milk can create a soothing effect in its liquid form and the best thing about it is the flavourful and relaxing milkshakes it yields. My personal favourite is the ‘banana milkshake’ which takes 5 minutes to make, is super easy and is the perfect accompaniment to watching television on lazy Sundays. The basic ingredients for this appetizing drink are: bananas, milk, sugar and vanilla ice-cream. The ingredients can be added in accordance to your taste preferences. Just pur everything in a blender and be pampered with a frothy and sweet drink. Milkshakes are a perfect heat and stress buster, try to experiment with different fruits and ice creams and create your personalized shake for the whole house to enjoy!

  • Lemonade or deter known as ‘limoo-pani’ in our part of the world is another pacifier to relieve the distress caused by the summer heat. Its contents are easily affordable and don’t require any artificial flavours. Add a pinch of salt and fine sugar to some lemon juice squeezed in a glass of cold water and relish in the disparity of tastes which are sweet and sour, yet salty as well. The best garnish for this cool drink is a handful of fresh mint leaves.

  • During the stifling summers, we find ourselves reaching out to many electrical appliances such as the refrigerator, freezer and even the microwave. The former two electronic devices help preserve our food whilst the microwave adds that warm freshness to ‘curry’ that was stored in the fridge all night. The point being, our reliance on these appliances has grown, but it has also encouraged us to discover our potential in the kitchen. After hours of load-shedding many of us crave something chilled and thirst-quenching; a problem solved by freshly cut fruit hibernating in the fridge. Of all the summer fruit, watermelon is ideal to reach the optimum level of coolness to alleviate the affect of the blazing sun. For all those women with young children who like having their food smothered with sweetness extraordinaire try this for breakfast. Make your children pancakes and to make it more appealing for them add maple and chocolate syrup to it. Finally, take a scoop of their favourite ice cream and plop it on top of the pancake! This cools down the pancake and acts as a partial dessert that melts its way into the dough enhancing the overall experience.

  • A special and edible accessory to the table is ‘chutney’; it adds a spicy yet invigorating zest to the food. The chutney of unripe mangoes or ‘kairi’ mixed with a bit of water, finely blended mint leaves and green chillies is a treat in the hot summer mouths. It’s a delightful accessory especially with ‘daal chawal’ and creates a lip smacking effect. Another succulent addition to lunch or dinner is coriander ‘chutney’ which is light, digestion-friendly and appealing for people of all ages. These can be made effortlessly and stored in the fridge for days to come.

  • Whenever you feel that your menu at home is getting mundane and rather monotonous, don’t hesitate to add these easily made chutneys to the table. The drinks mentioned above are exciting and aesthetically tasteful complimenting almost any meal. If we want to eat food that’s appealing in every way, all we have to do is invest a little time into choosing our ingredients and seasonings that are suitable for the time of the year. If electricity cuts and inadequate water supply are problems pestering us day and night, let’s be pestered with delightful treats to keep up from losing our minds!
